Breathing and exchange of gases take place in all living organisms. In this process, the respiratory system of an organism plays an important role. All organisms, from single bacterial cell to a blue whale undergo respiration and it is an essential process for the survival of an organism. Breathing is a physical process in which the oxygen gas is inhaled and carbon dioxide gas is exhaled out. Like, animals and humans, plants also carry out the process of exchange of gases to balance the composition of air in the atmosphere.
During the day, plants releases oxygen as a by-product of Photosynthesis and animals, birds and humans use this oxygen for breathing and releases carbon dioxide. These carbon dioxides are used by all green plants to synthesise food during the day in the presence of sunlight. Therefore both the Breathing and Exchange of Gases play a very important role in balancing the abiotic components of the ecosystem.
