NCERT Solutions Class 11 Biology Chapter 13 – Photosynthesis
The process where organisms produce their own food with the aid of light energy is called Photosynthesis. Most plants and some microorganisms use this process to produce their own food. They are usually the primary producers on the food chain. This process is very vital for the survival of everything on planet earth. A testament to this can be seen in the fossils roughly 65 million years ago. The dinosaurs were wiped out due to an asteroid that impacted the earth and sent a huge amount of dust and other materials that blocked out the sunlight for millennia.
Without sunlight, the plants began to die out and it was followed by the animals that fed on these plants. Eventually, the food web was affected and it led to mass extinction. Lack of food coupled with a drop in global temperatures (due to the large amounts of gas and dust) plunged the planet into an ice age. This ensured the extinction of dinosaurs and the rise of mammals. Therefore, photosynthesis is a very important process.
