What is  Bharat Ratna Award?

Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian award instituted in 1954, is given in recognition of exceptional service, performance of the highest order in any field of human endeavour. Any person without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex is eligible for this award.

In the original specification of the award, the award was made in circular shape, a gold medal shaped 35mm in diameter and had devanagari inscription of Bharat Ratna with symbolic sign of sun. On the opposite side, the state emblem of India and motto was there.

 

 

15 Interesting facts and Information about Bharat Ratna Award You Should Know

• The recommendations for awarding the Bharat Ratna are made by the Prime Minister to the President of India.

• The recommendations for awarding the Bharat Ratna are made by the Prime Minister to the President of India.

• Any person is eligible for this award without any distinction of race, occupation, position or sex.

• The number of Bharat Ratna awards is restricted to a maximum of 3, for a particular year.

• It should be noted here that it’s not mandatory to award Bharat Ratna every year.

• The Bharat Ratna Awardee, on conferment, receives a Sanad (certificate) signed by the President of India and a medallion. The medallion has its base shape of sacred peepal leaf, it is rimmed in platinum.

 

• The Bharat Ratna award does not carries any monetary grant.

Rules & Regulations: This award cannot be used as a ‘prefix or suffix’ to the recipient’s name. However, a recipient of the award can state the folloeing with his name:o ‘Awarded Bharat Ratna by the President’ oro ‘Recipient of Bharat Ratna Award’.

• The first Indian to receive Bharat Ratna Award was the famous scientist, Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman in 1954. He is also a Nobel prize winner.

• First three recipients of Bharat Ratna: In 1954, three remarkable Indians were awarded Bharat Ratna – C Rajgopalachari, S. Radhakrishnan and C.V.Raman.

 

• First posthumous Bharat Ratna: Lal Bahadur Shastri was the first Bharat Ratna recipient to be honoured posthumously in 1966.

• First Naturalised Citizen Bharat Ratna: Mother Teresa was the first naturalized Indian citizen to receive Bharat Ratna Award in 1980.

 

• Non-Indian Bharat Ratna Awardees: Two non indians have been awarded India’s highest civilian honour. Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan was awarded in 1987 and Nelson Mandela in 1990.

• In 2015, Educationist Madan Mohan Malviya and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee are awarded the 44th and 45th Bharat Ratna Award respectively.

 

 

Bharat Ratna Awards: History and Significance

 

On 2nd January 1954, the President of India had announced two civilian awards: – Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award and three tier Padma Vibhushan award.

Initially, the “Bharat Ratna” award was conferred on only alive persons and the award was not intended to be given posthumous. That is why Mahatma Gandhi wasn’t awarded with this award to highlight his exceptional role in nation building. Disputes related to Bharat Ratna Award

 

The Bharat Ratna has been surrounded by several controversies and multiple Public-Interest Litigations (PIL) had been filed against the conferral of the award.

 

1. Award to Subhash Chandra Bose: Posthumous Bharat Ratna Award to the Indian freedom fighter Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in 1992 came into news for typical reasons. A Public Interest Litigation stalled everything and the award was forced to be withdrawn thereafter.

 

 

2. Award to Abdul Kalam Azad: The argument of this esteemed freedom fighter was that why should he receive it when he was one of the selection committee members of this award. He was awarded Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1992 for outstanding contributions.

 

 

3. Award to Sachin Tendulkar: When it was decided to confer Sachin Tendulkar with Bharat Ratna, one of the activists of RTI gave in writing to India’s Election Commission that such a declaration amounted to violation of code of conduct of the elections. In this petition, he opinioned that as Sachin had been nominated as an MP from Congress, if the Bharat Ratna were to be conferred on him.

The Bharat Ratna awardee receives a Sanad signed by the President of India and a medallion. This medallion is made by the India Government Mint in Kolkata. The benefits and facilities associated with Bharat Ratna award are:

3. Pension equal to or 50% of Prime Minister of India’s salary.
