Total Number of States in India

Telangana, the last formed state in India was carved out of Andhra Pradesh in 2014 and this is how the total number of states in India reached to 29 in year 2014. You will be amazed to know total no of states in India in 1947, the year of independence from British rule – Read Here. And number of states in 1950 when Constitution of India came into force – Read Here. The chief minister rules the local government in each of 29 states and 2 union territories that are Delhi and Puducherry. Both have their own elected legislative assemblies and the executive councils of ministers with partially state-like function. The remaining 5 union territories are ruled by the center through administrators, appointed by the President of India.
