Central Ministries of India: The central government of the Republic of India is divided into several ministries to effectively carry out all the executive duties and functions required of them. The total number of ministries is not a constant number and new ministries are introduced and redundant ministries are removed according to the necessities of the country. As of 2019, there are 51 ministries present as a part of the government of India.

Most ministries cater to a particular sector of the country, creating and maintaining laws for the industries under them. But ministeries such as Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Defense are an integral part of the government and are essential for it’s functioning and reinforcing of the identity of India. The ministers responsible for each of the ministry are appointed after the end of general elections held by the elected Prime Minister of India. A minister can head multiple ministries if desired so by the Prime Minister. A list of all the ministries headed by union council of ministers or cabinet ministers are listed out below:

 

1. Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare

Established Year: 1947

Headed by: Radha Mohan Singh

The ministry is responsible for policy making and administration of the agricultural sector in India. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers welfare is well known for successfully implementing the green revolution which led to a significant increase in the agricultural output of the country. The ministry is also responsible for looking after the food processing industry and the supply chain of the agricultural sector.

 

2. Ministry of Chemical and Fertilisers

Established Year: 1991

Headed by:  Sripad Yasso Naik

Previously under the Ministry of the Industry, the Ministry of Chemical and Fertilisers was created as a separate ministry in 1991 to take care of the growing chemical, petrochemical, fertilisers and pharmaceutical industries. The ministry is responsible for creating rules and implementing laws related to the creation, handling and safety of chemical usage in India

 

3. Ministry of Civil Aviation

Established Year: 1947

Headed by: Suresh Prabhu

The Ministry of Civil Aviation is responsible for creating, maintaining and implementing laws with regards to the civil aviation industry in India. They are the primary stakeholders in the growth and safety of the industry and it’s supporting infrastructure such as airports etc.

 

4. Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution

Established Year: 1980

Headed by: Ram Vilas Paswan

To protect the consumers’ interests against unfair practices of the traders and businessmen, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution were set up. They are responsible for creating, maintaining and implementing consumer laws in the country. Many of the iconic public awareness campaigns and advertisements such as Jago Grahak Jago were the initiation of the ministry.

 

5. Ministry of Corporate Affairs

Established Year: 1950

Headed by: Arun Jaitley

The Ministry of Corporate Affairs was created to look after the creation, modification and implementation of laws with regards to the creation of companies and it’s relationship and interaction with various entities such as workers and customers.

 

6. Ministry of Defense (An important Ministry of India)

Established Year: 1947

Headed by: Nirmala Sitharaman

Ministry of Defence is one of the primary pillars of the Republic of India. To highlight it’s importance, it was created on the same date as the independence day of the country. The ministry controls and supervises all the defence forces of India, i.e, Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. They are also responsible for taking care of various public sector-defence companies such as HAL, BEL, BDL and MDL

 

7. Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation

Established Year: 2011

Headed by: Uma Bharti

A relative newcomer, it highlights the growing importance of the drinking water and sanitation in India. There is an estimated shortage of clean drinking water in future, and Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation was formed to tackle the problem. The ministry branched off from Ministry of Rural Development to form in 2011.

 

8. Ministry of Earth Sciences

Established Year: 2006

Headed by: Harsh Vardhan

The Ministry of Earth Sciences primary responsibility is to look after the geological and geographical concern of India. Unlike other ministries, the ministry was actually formed with the combination of separate departments of Government of India, i.e., IMD, NCMRWF, IITM and EREC. The ministry is currently taking care of Ocean Sciences, Atmospheric Sciences and Seismology.

 

9. Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology

Established Year: 2016

Headed by: Ravi Shankar Prasad

The Ministry of Electronics has been modified from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. The changes were made to reflect the changing landscape of the industry where communication has become a subsect of the electronics industry rather than its mainstay. They are responsible for maintaining laws and regulations in the IT industry.

 

10. Ministry of External Affairs

Established Year: 1946

Headed by: Sushma Swaraj

One of the most important ministries of the Government of India, it is responsible for handling all the aspect relating to the relationships and regulations with respect to foreign countries. The ministry was central to many of the diplomatic achievement India had from its independence days. The ministry comprises of many officers from the esteemed Indian Foreign Service (IFS) cadre renowned worldwide.

 

11. Ministry of Finance (major ministry of India)

Established Year: 1946

Headed by: Arun Jaitley

A crucial ministry of the government, the Ministry of Finance is responsible for handling the economy of India as well as various other important decisions such as taxation, budget and financial legislation. The ministry of Finance holds the keys to the lifeblood of the Indian economy.

 

12. Ministry of Food Processing Industries

Established Year: 1988

Headed by: Harsimrat Kaur Badal

To battle the crises of adulterated food being prevalent at the time, the ministry of food Processing industries was introduced in 1988. The ministry forms the primary stakeholder for forming laws and regulations for the food processing industry in India.

 

13. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare

Established Year: 1976

Headed by: Jagat Prakash Nadda

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare was formed to look after the population of India. They are the primary body handling the family planning and looking after the required support services. They are also responsible for various vaccine programs for common diseases in India.

 

14. Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises

Established Year: 2012

Headed by: Anant Geete

There are various Public Sector Enterprises (PSEs) controlled by India. To maintain and manage all the companies in various important heavy industries, Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises was formed. They form the bulwark and glue between the companies and future long-term planning of the policymakers.

 

15. Ministry of Home Affairs (Major central ministry of India)

Established Year: 1947

Headed by: Rajnath Singh

To maintain all the matters regarding the internal security of the country such as the police, paramilitary forces and internal policy is taken care of by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Along with the Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Finance, the form the backbone of the executive council of India.

 

16. Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Elevation

Established Year: 2004

Headed by: Hardeep Singh Puri

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Elevation was initially a part of Ministry of Urban Development and was split in 2004 to give a greater focus on the issue of increasing housing shortage for poor. The ministry is responsible for all the aspects of urban poverty elevation such as housing as well as unemployment.

 

17. Ministry of Human Resource Development

Established Year: 1985

Headed by: Prakash Javadekar

One of the crucial ministries responsible for the development of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development is the primary stakeholder of the education sector in the country. The ministry is divided into two parts, with one taking the responsibility of basic education and school level education, and the other takes the administrative duties of university level and technical education.

 

18. Ministry of Law and Justice

Established Year: 1947

Headed by: Ravi Shankar Prasad

One of the oldest ministries in India which were active from the period of 1833 and was incorporated into the government after India gained independence. The primary responsibility of the ministry is to draft and advice the central government on the principal legislation. In addition to that, the Ministry of Law and Justice is also responsible for the legal affairs, activity and administration.

 

19. Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises

Headed by: Giriraj Singh

With government’s increasing focus on the small scale companies believed to increase the employment in the country, the Indian government has introduced the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. The ministry’s primary focus is on the nurturing, assistance and development of small enterprises in the rural areas of the country.

 

20. Ministry of Mines

Established Year: 1957

Headed by: Narendra Singh Tomar

The ministry of Mines was introduced to bring regulation in the extraction and maintenance of mining activities and prevent exploitation and destruction of the areas surrounding the mines. The ministry also handles the survey of the existing mines and discovery of new mines.

 

21. Ministry of Minority Affairs

Established Year: 2006

Headed by: Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi

A relatively new addition to the executive body of the central government of India, the Ministry of Minority Affairs has become the lynchpin of the poverty upliftment and development of the minority section in India. The interests and development of the linguistic, cultural and religious minority are taken care of by the ministry.

 

22. Ministry of Power

Established Year: 1992

Headed by: Piyush Goyal

The power sector is the crucial infrastructure for the development of the country. Ministry of Power is responsible for overseeing this essential sector and is also responsible for taking care of the development of adequate infrastructure. Recently due to the renewed shift in the installation of renewable power sources, there has been a significant shift in the functioning of the ministry.

 

23. Ministry of Railways

Established Year: 1853

Headed by: Piyush Goyal

Rail Transport along with the roadways forms the backbone of transportation and supply chain sector in India. Ministry of Railways is one of the oldest ministries in the government of India and until recently was one of the most important ministries with its own separate budget date to that of the main budget. They are responsible for handling and taking care of the railway infrastructure and transportation in the country.

 

24. Ministry of Road Transport and Highways

Established Year: 1942

Headed by: Nitin Gadkari

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is responsible for administration and maintenance of the road transport sector in India. Road transportation is one of the key infrastructures for the development of the country which connects every household and distant villages to every other part of the country.

 

25. Ministry of Rural Development

Established Year: 2014

Headed by: Narendra Singh Tomar

Rural Development was most often ignored an aspect of successive central governments. Ministry of Rural Development was introduced in 2014 and has brought forth renewed focus in the development of the rural sector in the country. The ministry consists of two departments and responsible for rural development and land resources respectively.

 

26. Ministry of Science and Technology

Established Year: 1971

Headed by: Harsh Vardhan

To improve the research conditions in the country and to prevent bright minds from leaving the country due to lack of necessary infrastructure and atmosphere, the Ministry of Science and Technology was introduced to improve the quality of scientific research in the country. The ministry has taken a number of commendable initiatives till date.

 

27. Ministry of Shipping

Established Year: 1942

Headed by: Niin Gadkari

To look after the shipping industry and formulating laws with regards to them, the ministry of shipping was formed. The ministry takes care of the administration with regards to the shipbuilding, implementation and repair of the major ports, water transport and major waterways in the country. The ministry has overseen the growth of the shipping industry in the country.

 

28. Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment

Established Year: 1985

Headed by: Thawar Chand Gehlot

The ministry was introduced for the empowerment of minority sector and disadvantaged section in the country. They take care of the social justice and human rights aspects of the section.  They also handle the welfare and development of the disadvantaged section such as scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.

 

29. Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation

Established Year: 1999

Headed by: Dr V. Sadananda Gowda

To manage the census bureau of India and measure the qualitative aspects of all the statistical samples taken, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation was introduced in 1999. The Ministry plays a key role in the measurement of various important metrics such as Gross Domestic Product, growth rate and population census of India.

 

30. Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship

Established Year: 2014

Headed by: Dharmendra Pradhan

Split from the Ministry of Labour and Employment in 2015. The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship was segregated to tackle the growing problem of unemployment among youth in the country. The ministry is responsible for skill development youth and encourages the development of entrepreneurial culture in the country.

 

31. Ministry of Steel

Established Year: 2010

Headed by: Chaudhary Birendra Singh

Steel is an integral part of the development of the country. Due to its significance, the Government of India created the Ministry of Steel in 2010 to formulate policy and regulate the production and distribution of steel. The ministry also helps in coordination among major steel producers in India.

 

32. Ministry of Textiles

Established Year: 1987

Headed by: Smriti Irani

The textile industry is one of the major employers in the country with over 40 million people working directly for the industry and around 60 million working indirectly for the ministry. Due to its significance, the Government of India has a separate Ministry to regulate and take care of the textile industry. The ministry also handles all the export negotiations with other countries on behalf industry.

 

33. Ministry of Heavy Industry and Public Enterprises

Established Year: 1966

Headed by: Anat Geete

The government of India has a majority stake in 48 public sector companies which are major players in their respective industries. Ministry of Heavy Industry and Public Enterprises is the primary regulator to take care of such large behemoths. They also are the primary operator in case of any restructure any of the companies under them.

 

34. Ministry of Tribal Affairs

Established Year: 1999

Headed by: Jual Oram

To have a greater focus on the development and empowerment of the tribal community in India, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs was split from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in 1999. The move was deemed necessary because the tribal communities were among the most underprivileged in India. The Ministry is also working towards preserving the culture and heritage of the tribal communities.

 

35. Ministry of Urban Development

Established Year: 2004

Headed by: Narendra Singh Tomar

Cities are the growth engines of the country. Established in 2004, the Ministry of Urban Development tackles various development challenges in urban areas such as traffic congestions, overcrowdedness, access to clean drinking water. Recently the focus of the Ministry has turned towards cleanliness and has started encouraging cities to adopt various measures to improve upon this aspect.

 

36. Ministry of Water Resources

Established Year: 1985

Headed by: Nitin Gadkari

Water is one of the prime natural resources in the country and it’s availability and accessibility is a key factor in well being of the citizens. Ministry of Water Resources is responsible for the regulation and administration of this crucial resource. Formed in 1985, the Ministry of Water Resources handles various river boards throughout India.

 

37. Ministry of Women and Child Development

Established Year: 1985

Headed by: Maneka Gandhi

Women are highly underrepresented in our society despite them being the primary contributors in the functioning of the family and society. Ministry of Women and Child Development work towards empowerment of women and regulate policies which help them with the child development. They also hand out awards that highlight the accomplishments of women in various fields.

 

The list shows all the central government ministries of India which are headed by cabinet ministers. The ministries are subject to change according to the requirements and demands of the country. They are an effective tool to manage and formulate various sectors and aspects of the country. The ministers currently heading their respective ministries are subject to change according to the will of the prime minister and every 5 years after the end general elections.
